  5.     That thud heard last week was the sound of Europe's last
  6. Marxist dictatorship landing on the trash heap of history.
  7. Following three days of student riots in Tirana, Albanian
  8. President Ramiz Alia summoned leaders of the demonstrations to
  9. his palace. Alia then abruptly canceled the Communists' 44-year
  10. monopoly on politics. He announced that henceforth rival
  11. parties will be permitted in the interest of "further
  12. democratization."

  14.     One day later, at a mass rally, a brand-new Democratic Party
  15. was formed. Its program, organizers said, would call for basic
  16. human rights, a mixed-market economy and parliamentary
  17. democracy. The fledgling party will now try to sell that
  18. program to voters unaccustomed to choice, in time for national
  19. elections scheduled for next February.
